True commitment sets in motion a momentum of support that extends beyond what we can accomplish on our own. Lentils, my favorite legume, may be small but they pack a mighty nutritional punch! Lentils are high in protein and fiber and low in fat, and they provide folic acid and iron. Lentils have a mild, earthy flavor and readily absorb a variety of wonderful flavors from other foods and seasonings. This lentil soup is not only healthy but very hearty. It'll give you energy without weighing you down. Enjoy this traditional and warming dish.

As we grow older, we expect certain changes to occur. We may notice that we have less energy, gain weight, and are not as strong as we used to be. Aging may contribute to these symptoms however inactivity is the major cause--and that's something that we can address. Strength training is the most crucial step we can take to slow down our aging.  If we don't engage in a strength training program on a regular basis then we'll lose 40-50% of our muscle mass and 50% of our muscle strength by age 65 and, sadly, even more by age 80. When this happens, we can become so debilitated that we'll depend on others to help us with simple daily activities.

I recently found out that one of my long-term class members, Norma Sass, just turned 90. I announced it to everyone in class that day and, after the initial shock wore off, we all burst into applause to acknowledge her very special birthday. No one could believe that she was 90!  Norma has been attending my Goldenaires Strength and Stretch class for over 13 years, and I feel truly blessed to know her. I want to honor her on our blog this month because I feel that she deserves the recognition.

Check out this impromptu performance.  We are only as old as we feel; our attitudes largely affect how we age.  Enjoy! This adorable couple certainly does.

My jaw dropped recently when one of my line dancing class members,  Johanna de Bruin, told me about her recent skydiving experience. She said that she saw someone on TV skydiving once and ever since then she has wanted to do it. She was beside herself when a friend of hers told her about SkyDance, a premiere Skydiving Training Center located in Davis, California. Johanna immediately called them to schedule a tandem skydive. She was over the top with her excitement! Oh, and by the way, Johanna is eighty years old. Wa-hoo! Check out these photos!
