Video: Happiness Goes Viral

Posted by: Jeanette |

August 17, 2016

From Youtube: "What is it about laughter that's contagious? Sometimes you just can't stop from smiling when you hear or see it. Last September, an elderly couple from Iowa infused the internet with laughter and joy. Their random act of happiness at Mayo Clinic hit You Tube and made more than 6 million people smile. And that, say Francis and Marlow Cowan, is what keeps them young"

Functional Fitness Over 50

Posted by: Jeanette |

September 21, 2014

I love how well the exercises we do together in my boomer and senior classes help maintain and improve our functional fitness for easier, daily living. Life is meant to be enjoyed...there's so much we can enthusiastically explore, express, learn and create while we're alive on this beautiful Earth of ours. Staying active makes that possible at every age! Here's what Stephanie, age 79, from my Fit and Fun Youthful Hearts class had to say after returning from another one of her many adventurous trips. She is truly inspirational and so radiantly adorable to me!

Sometimes we feel so overwhelmed by situations in our lives that we overlook the simple, step by step actions we can take to make things better. This story beautifully demonstrates what an impact we can have when we focus on one thing at a time. You'll especially enjoy this story if you are, or have ever been, a caretaker for others (persons or animals) and wondered if what you do/have done for them matters.

I borrowed this senior comedy video from a website called Big Geek Daddy. It's hilarious entertainment and I hope you'll take a few minutes to watch it. Remember...laughter is the best medicine! "It's another funny skit from a retirement home showing that just because you get old doesn’t mean you have to stop having fun. I hope these senior swimmers won a Gold Medal for this outstanding performance!"

This is the best case of non-retirement that I've ever seen. Ever feel too old or too tired? Well, then watch this video. Go out and about in the City of Mississauga, Canada with Mayor Hazel McCallion. This amazing 88 year old major has done wonders for her city and has been in office for over 30 years! And get this...the city of Mississauga is DEBT FREE, with money in reserve! She must be doing SOMETHING right. Plus, she can still play hockey! I love this woman--she's the "poster senior" for aging well.  ♥

I want to shine the spotlight on a very special lady who I am lucky enough to have in my Fit and Fun Class. Her name is Lorri Murke and she is such an inspiration to me and many other women, as you will discover when you read her story. I'm guessing that many of you have, like me, complained about your hair at one time or another. (I've had my share of what I felt were "bad hair days!") Well, Lorri doesn't have ANY hair, and she is one of the most beautiful women I've ever met. Lorri has raised the bar for me on what it means to accept yourself and get on with living your life! Her courage and resilience are admirable to say the least, and what a joy she is to be around! I'm so blessed to have her radiance shine on me weekly.  I asked her to write a bit of her story so that I could share it with all of you. Here's what she wrote:

I recently found out that one of my long-term class members, Norma Sass, just turned 90. I announced it to everyone in class that day and, after the initial shock wore off, we all burst into applause to acknowledge her very special birthday. No one could believe that she was 90!  Norma has been attending my Goldenaires Strength and Stretch class for over 13 years, and I feel truly blessed to know her. I want to honor her on our blog this month because I feel that she deserves the recognition.

My jaw dropped recently when one of my line dancing class members,  Johanna de Bruin, told me about her recent skydiving experience. She said that she saw someone on TV skydiving once and ever since then she has wanted to do it. She was beside herself when a friend of hers told her about SkyDance, a premiere Skydiving Training Center located in Davis, California. Johanna immediately called them to schedule a tandem skydive. She was over the top with her excitement! Oh, and by the way, Johanna is eighty years old. Wa-hoo! Check out these photos!

When you think of world record holders in track and field you probably don't think about Canadian Olga Kotelko. Her competitive quest has taken her from Argentina to Austrailia and she has won numerous medals. She is truly a remarkable 91 year old woman.  You have got to watch this video! You'll be amazed and inspired for sure.  I sure was!
