How to Manage Falls Safely

Posted by: Jeanette |

April 1, 2018

Falls are a major cause of death and/or disability for people over 65. Learning about fall prevention is important, of course, but it is equally important to know how to fall to reduce the impact and incur the least possible injury. A few quick tips to follow when falling are: protect your head, turn to your side as you fall, keep your arms and legs bent, relax, roll out of the impact, try to spread out the impact of the force of the fall, and step into the fall. In this post, I have included a very informative, easy to understand, illustrational resource that educates in much greater detail about how to fall safely.

Getting Up and Down From Floor Video #14

Posted by: Jeanette |

March 27, 2016

One of my favorite functional exercises  (and, in my opinion, the most important to practice DAILY!) is getting up and down from the floor. Don’t wait until you fall down to try and work out how to get up. If you practice getting up and down from the floor once a week, you might be surprised at how easily you can get up. Watch this video and notice how many different ways my beautiful Youthful Hearts class members do this. :-)

We humans can get very set in our ways and be on autopilot as we get older.

I have no classes in Novato next week, so I got to start my Thanksgiving celebration early today. My Fit and Fun gals showed up today donning aprons. They presented me with a cornucopia of autumn harvest treats and a hand painted apron that they all autographed in brightly colored acrylic paints. Just beautiful! They are so good to me. (They also brought rolling pins and a couple of turkey basters to use as exercise equipment. What a hoot!) Love to you all for your zestful living! Happy  Thanksgiving everyone! Support active aging and vibrant longevity through the regular practice of the ancient art of Qigong, (pronounced 'chee gung'). It is a beautifully flowing movement meditation (similar in some ways to Tai Chi) that will cultivate within you an increased sense of well being, calmness, mental alertness, inner/outer balance, as well as strengthen all the systems and organs of your body.  For seniors, it is especially helpful to those with arthritis, hypertension and mobility issues. Join me for this rejuvenating, gentle session that only takes 5 minutes and 35 seconds to do and can be done standing or sitting. Allow yourself to breathe deeper, move gracefully, focus your intention and feel your natural aliveness!

This low impact aerobics practice segment is a fun way to warm up (and wake-up!) the mind and body. It's great to do before more vigorous exercise or if you've been sitting for awhile and your body needs to MOVE! Even short periods of exercise can boost the metabolism and support heart and brain health.  If you have limited mobility then you can modify and follow along while sitting in an armless chair. (This episode is a bit longer than the usual 5 minutes because it includes an encore "performance" for those who want to go through the routine a 2nd time.)

Strength Training: The Older We Get the More Important it is To Do!

Posted by: Jeanette |

November 1, 2011 |

Comments (2)

As we grow older, we expect certain changes to occur. We may notice that we have less energy, gain weight, and are not as strong as we used to be. Aging may contribute to these symptoms however inactivity is the major cause--and that's something that we can address. Strength training is the most crucial step we can take to slow down our aging.  If we don't engage in a strength training program on a regular basis then we'll lose 40-50% of our muscle mass and 50% of our muscle strength by age 65 and, sadly, even more by age 80. When this happens, we can become so debilitated that we'll depend on others to help us with simple daily activities.

Getting Up From the Floor

Older bodies are prone to loss of strength and muscle (sarcopenia). Fast-twitch muscle fibers are especially prone to atrophy which is why many older adults lose their ability to push the body up to a standing position. Also, proprioception, the ability to balance while standing and moving, declines.  But, it doesn't have to be this way!

Falling is a major cause of injury to seniors. When we were younger, our brain, muscles, nerves, ears and eyes worked really well together to keep us upright and steady on our feet. However, as we age our equilibrium and balance decline, mostly due to reduced physical activity. We need to consciously work our balance skills to keep them functioning well for us. The good news is that with ongoing practice, you can dramatically improve your balance. So let's get moving! Most people know that exercise is good for their health. After all, there are a multitude of reasons why we should be exercising, such as lowering the risk for and managing serious chronic conditions, attaining/maintaining a healthy weight, building muscle and bone strength and decreasing stress, to name a few. However, even with so many compelling reasons to exercise many people just can't get themselves to do it on a regular basis.

Effective Breathing For Better Vitality

Many people don't recognize how enjoyable deep breathing can be. They are either completely unconscious about their breath, or they breathe mechanically because they are trying too hard to do it right. They may see it as a part of their exercise program, but not necessarily something to incorporate into their daily life. Breathing feels good just for its own sake because it affirms and strengthens the life force that flows through us and that IS us. We feel more energetically uplifted as we tune into our breath and allow it to flow more freely through us. The more we breathe in the gift of life the more alive we feel.

INACTIVITY is a major reason that some older adults lose their ability to do things on their own. In addition, lack of exercise combined with poor dietary habits is currently one of the largest underlying causes of death in the U.S. This is sad, but it doesn't have to be that way! Just because we're aging doesn't mean that we have to experience a diminished quality of life.   When we make exercise a regular lifetime habit, we not only improve our daily capabilities, but we also FEEL better. Even moderate levels of physical activity can bring measurable improvements.
